RSA Data Security Conference, SAN FRANCISCO, CA, January 12, 1998 -- C2Net Software, Inc. today announced deployment in Australia of its SafePassage Web Proxy and Stronghold Crypto Engine products in an innovative, online access-to-government service called "maxi," developed by maxi multimedia pty ltd, a joint venture between NEC Australia and Aspect Computing.

maxi is an advanced electronic service delivery network allowing secure remote access to Victorian Government services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Citizens can access about 30 government-related transactions online, ranging from vehicle registration, applications for birth or marriage certificates, obtaining a permit to sell goods, changing address with government departments, paying bills, and so on. They can access the service over the Internet, or by using public multimedia kiosks located throughout the State, or over the telephone via an interactive voice response system.

"maxi is very pleased with the C2Net products," said Neil Yamagishi, General Manager, Marketing for NEC Australia, "We had complex requirements to upgrade export-crippled encryption products and provide a development platform for our own enhancements. maxi has integrated smartcard and server cryptography hardware enhancements, plus Certificate Revocation List handling. The C2Net products have proven robust and well supported and we have licensed C2Net's SafePassage Web Proxy product so that we can provide it to all of our customers as part of our service."

maxi selected C2Net's SafePassage Web Proxy software to upgrade the US export-restricted encryption of web browser programs such as Netscape Navigator or Communicator or Microsoft's Internet Explorer. SafePassage Web Proxy performs authentication using digital certificates to ensure the identity of individuals using the system. The KeyPOST Certification Authority, a division of the Australian postal service, provides the digital certificates used in the maxi system.

Behind the scenes, maxi servers use C2Net's new Stronghold Crypto Engine product to boost the US export-restricted encryption capabilities of the Microsoft Internet Information Sever to ensure that full 128-bit data encryption is used to protect communications end-to-end across the maxi system.
